Stegosaurus (scientific name: Stegosaurus stenops, meaning "roof lizard," with the species name meaning "narrow face") belongs to the ornithischian family Stegosauridae and is one of the most famous herbivorous dinosaurs of the Late Jurassic. Its holotype specimen was discovered and named in 1877 by American paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh in Colorado, USA. The most distinctive features of Stegosaurus are the two alternating rows of diamond-shaped plates along its back (extending from the neck to the tail) and the four 1-meter-long spikes at the tip of its tail (commonly called "thagomizer"). The plates likely served for thermoregulation, display, or defense, while the tail spikes were deadly weapons against predators like Allosaurus. Adult Stegosaurus reached about 7–9 meters in length, about 4 meters tall, and weighed approximately 3–4 tons. It had small, pebble-like teeth, short forelimbs, long hind limbs, and an extremely small, walnut-sized brain. Stegosaurus lived approximately 155 to 145 million years ago in North America and Europe.
